Non stick cookware is a staple in modern kitchens. No one wants to cook with outdated pots and pans that allow food to stick to them. These can be a pain to clean, not to mention that food is wasted since it clings to the pan and cannot be eaten. There are a few different options for purchasing non stick cookware, and each have their own set of pros and cons.

Cast iron cookware has been around long before the idea of non stick cookware sets came about. Even though it dates back further, it still provides those in the kitchen with a non stick surface. One positive aspect of using cast iron is that it is virtually indestructible. Purchasing one pan can last you several decades. It could even be passed down through families it is so durable. Most of the more modern options for non stick cookware come coated with a substance that prevents the food from sticking to the metal. Some can come with a silicone coating. These are among the least expensive cookware you can get that will not allow food to stick. However, the material used to make the items non stick cannot withstand the heat of the stove, so silicone coated items are primarily available for baking.

Other non stick cookware sets come with layers of polytetrafluoroethylene, known as PTFE for short. The cheapest come with a single layer of the non stick material. The downfall for these is that they are not scratch resistant. Because of this, they need to be replaced faster than other cookware.

Double and multiple layer PTFE pots and pans are the highest grade non stick cookware in their class. Those that come with more than one layer help to seal each other to the cooking device, making its non stick surface last longer. The more layers you have the better quality food the pots and pans will produce. Additionally, these tend to be more durable and resistant to scratches, meaning they can be used a lot longer than single layer cookware. The only downside to this choice is the price, but you get what you pay for.

As you can see, there are a number of options available when it comes to non stick cookware. You may want to go with the tried and true cast iron that has been around for many, many years. On the other hand, you may want to opt for something a bit more modern and go with cookware that has been coated with special non stick substances. No matter the choice, be sure to consider the pros and cons of each type before you make your purchase.
